How UK metal supply is structured
Four layers sit between the furnace and your saw.
- Mills. A handful of producers: Tata Steel UK for strip, British Steel for sections and rail, Marcegaglia Stainless Sheffield for stainless bar, Special Metals Wiggin for nickel alloys, TIMET UK for titanium. They sell by the tonne, through stockholders.
- Stockholders and service centres. National and regional firms hold the stock, saw it, profile it and deliver it. This is where a machine shop or fabricator buys.
- Specialists. Aerospace and exotic-alloy houses, tool steel houses and tube specialists carry the grades a general stockholder does not.
- Small-quantity and online sellers. Cut pieces over the counter or by post, with no account and no minimum.
Stockholders hold UK-made and imported steel side by side, and since 1 July 2026 imports of 20 steel categories have been rationed by tariff-free quota. When a quota runs out, the price of imported bar, plate and sections moves. The UK Steel Quota Tracker shows the live remaining balance on every category.

A dot means the stockholder lists that material in its range. It does not mean a given grade, size or form is on the shelf today. AS9120 is marked only where the company's own website stated it. NW marks a stock site in North West England.

How to choose between them
- Check who owns your second source. Two stockholders with the same parent are one supply decision. Aalco and Righton Blackburns are both controlled by Amari Metals, so for a true second source in aluminium, stainless or copper alloys, go outside that group.
- If the job is aerospace, buy from an AS9120 site and keep the certificate with the job. Approval is held per site, so ask for the certificate of the depot that ships to you.
- If you need one bar, not a bundle, use a stockholder that says it takes small orders, or a cut-to-size counter. A national service centre may apply a minimum order charge.
- If you need it turned, ground, heat treated or profiled, ask the stockholder first. Bar specialists and plate profilers often do it cheaper than roughing it yourself.
- Ask for an EN 10204 3.1 certificate and the country of melt on engineering and stainless bar. Origin now affects price as well as paperwork. The certificates and traceability guide covers what to specify.
- Get both quotes in the same week. Import quotas are set by quarter and prices can move as a quota runs down, so a quote from last month and one from today are not a comparison.
What checking 72 entries turned up
This directory started as a research list of about 110 names. On 3 October 2026, 72 of the entries that had not been confirmed were checked one by one against the Companies House register and the company's own website.
- Eight names came out. Seven had been dissolved or closed, some of them years ago. One turned out to sell a product outside engineering metals.
- Two "alternatives" shared an owner. The register showed Amari Metals behind both Aalco and Righton Blackburns, which the research list had treated as independent.
- Several depots were not where the list said. One "Manchester" service centre is in Golborne, near Warrington. Another stockholder's only Greater Manchester address on its own website is a finance and admin office.
- 46 entries are published. Each has an active company, a confirmed stock site and a confirmed range. The rest stay off the page until they can be confirmed.
TrueNorth Engineering, Manchester, keeps the same dataset inside its Digital Factory platform, where a machining supplier can see the nearest stockholder for the material on an order.
How this list is checked, and how to correct it
An entry is published only when the company is active on the Companies House register, a stock site is confirmed, and the range is confirmed from the company's own website. Approvals are recorded only where the company states them. Nobody pays to be listed and the order of names carries no ranking. If you work for a listed stockholder and something is wrong, or you think you should be on the list, email admin@tneltd.com and it will be checked and corrected.
