How to choose in the North West
- If you need engineering bar, start with High Peak Steels or Barrett Engineering Steel. Both are bar specialists and both saw to length.
- If you need aluminium, stainless or copper alloys, you have several depots within 15 miles. Aalco and Righton Blackburns share an owner (Amari Metals), so pair one of them with Holme Dodsworth, Metalweb or thyssenkrupp Materials UK when you want two independent quotes.
- If the job is aerospace, buy from a site that states AS9120 and ask for that depot's certificate.
- If you need one cut piece today, a cut-to-size counter is quicker than opening a trade account.
- If the grade is not held locally, ask a specialist further away whether it delivers to you, and get the delivery charge before you compare prices.

What checking the North West entries turned up
- A "Manchester" service centre in Golborne. Righton Blackburns' Manchester service centre is at Stonecross Park, Golborne, about 15 miles from Piccadilly.
- A hub the first list missed. Holme Dodsworth Metals has a stock hub in Crumpsall, 2 miles from Piccadilly, that was not on the original research list.
- Addresses that are offices. Two Greater Manchester addresses on the research list turned out to be offices on the companies' own websites, and one further address could not be confirmed as a stock site. All three are left off this page.
