A manufacturing marketplace is a software platform in front of an open network of workshops. Upload CAD, an algorithm prices it, and when you order, the job routes to whichever partner in the network takes it. Xometry and Protolabs Network run this model at global scale, and for the right job it is a genuinely good buy. The platform manages the transaction; the workshops manage the making; you manage the platform.

A manufacturing coordinator inverts the structure. One firm curates a private network of shops it has audited itself, matches your part to a shop by engineering judgement rather than algorithm, buys the parts in its own name, inspects them before dispatch, and carries the liability when something is wrong. You hold one contract, with the coordinator, and the coordinator holds the risk.

The label is newer than the model. Subcontract buyers have used firms like this for decades under names like managed supply and engineering supply chain management. Every row is the same trade seen from a different side. The marketplace sells access to capacity, fast and at scale. The coordinator sells an outcome, with a name attached to it.
