Buyers act on the first credible quote, not the cheapest one. That is worth knowing on both sides of the table.
What is actually happening during those days
A quote is not a calculation. It is a small procurement exercise.
For a turned part in EN1A from bar stock, the shop already knows the material cost and cycle time. That is a one-day answer.
For a fabricated bracket that needs laser cutting, folding, welding, anodising and a material certificate, the quoting shop has to get prices back from three other businesses. Each of those has its own queue. Your five-day quote is really four sequential one-day quotes stacked up.
The delay you feel is rarely arithmetic. It is waiting on someone else's inbox.
What makes a quote slow, in order of impact
- An incomplete RFQ pack. No material grade, no tolerance on the critical feature, no surface finish call-out, no quantity. Every gap is an email round trip, and each round trip costs a day.
- Quantity not stated as a break. Setup amortisation dominates low volumes. Without quantities the shop guesses, then has to requote.
- Multi-process routing. Every additional supplier in the chain adds a day.
- Special material. If the grade is not on a stockist's shelf, the shop is waiting on a mill enquiry.
- Drawing revision confusion. Two revisions in circulation stops the quote until someone confirms which is live.
- The shop is busy. Quoting is unpaid work. A full shop deprioritises it, and rarely tells you.
Points 1 to 3 are inside your control. That is the useful part.

For context on the direction of travel, the UK platform Geomiq markets quotes returned within one business day, and industry commentary generally puts the manual norm at one to three days, stretching past a week for complex aerospace work. Treat platform figures as marketing claims rather than audited benchmarks, but the buyer expectation they reflect is real.
How to get a faster quote (the part you control)
Send a complete pack the first time. A complete pack is a dimensioned PDF drawing, a STEP file, the material grade and condition, the surface finish requirement, any certification requirement, the quantity breaks you actually want, and the delivery address.
State your decision date. "I need to place this by Friday" moves an RFQ up a queue more reliably than any follow-up email.
Give quantity breaks rather than one number. Asking for 5, 20 and 50 off in the same RFQ costs the shop almost nothing extra and tells you where the setup cost stops hurting.
Say what the part does. A shop that understands the function can propose a cheaper route. A shop working blind quotes the drawing exactly as drawn, including the tolerances you did not really need.
Flag the deal-breakers early. If you need an EN 10204 3.1 material certificate, say so in the RFQ. Retro-fitting certification to a quote is a requote.
What this looks like in practice
At TrueNorth every RFQ gets acknowledged the same working day, and every new drawing gets a free manufacturability review before we price it. That review is where most of the cost gets taken out.
On a recent hydrogen sector enquiry for long tie rods, over two metres and around 103 kg per bar, the questions that decided the price were not the machining. They were whether the material certificate had to be 3.1, and whether the threads were gauged before or after coating. Both answers change the route and the price.
We asked those two questions on day one rather than quoting twice. On a set of flanges for a different customer we ran the same process and found a competitor pricing at roughly 58 percent of our buy-in cost, which told us the competitor was quoting a different process route or a different quality scope, not the same part cheaper.
